The film caused a lot of questions – people are looking for information on the Internet whether the threat from outer space is really close to us. We clarify all doubts with an expert, prof. Tomasz Kwiatkowski from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, who has been studying asteroids approaching the Earth for many years, and Dawid with a fighter from the “Attention! Scientific Bełkot” channel.
An asteroid hitting Earth is not only possible, but … it happens frequently. In addition, during our lifetime, asteroids large enough to destroy buildings and injure thousands of people, and at the same time so small that we did not notice them in time, fell on Earth. This was the case with the Chelyabinsk object that exploded from the Earth’s atmosphere. If only it had fallen from a different angle, the results could have been catastrophic.
How big would the object have to be to break through the Earth’s atmosphere and destroy, for example, Warsaw? Is such a scenario possible? We explain.
